1)  put it in ~ mode

~ 모드로 하다

But, wait no, h-hey, can't I just put it in airplane mode?

그렇지만, 잠깐만. 그냥 비행기 모드로 하면 안 되는 거야?

 

[바꾸다]를 의미하는 switch 를 써서 switch it to airplane mode 라고 할 수도 있어요.

공연 동안 폰은 진동 모드로 해 두세요.

폰을 무음 모드로 바꿀 수 없는 것 같아요.

 

2)  I'm afraid + 문장

안됐지만 ~ 이다

 

I'm sorry to hear that, but I'm afraid you already know too much.

그렇다니 유감이야. 안됐지만 넌 이미 너무 많은 걸 알고 있어.

 

afraid 는 [두려워하는]이라는 의미로 많이 쓰이는데요. 그럴 경우엔 보통 be afraid of 을 써서 [~을 두려워하다]의 의미를 가집니다. 영상에서처럼 상대방에게 안 좋은 소식을 전하며 격식을 차려 유감을 표현할 때는 [I'm afraid (that) + 문장] 을 쓰시면 됩니다.

 

 

예문

I'm afraid Mr. Nicholson is not in the office now.
죄송하지만 니콜슨 씨는 지금 자리에 계시지 않습니다.

I'm afraid that I can't let you in. You don't have the pass.
유감이지만 들어가실 수 없어요. 통행권이 없으시잖아요.

3)  gain on ~

~에 가까워지다

 

They're gaining on us.

우리에게 가까워지고 있어.

 

단순히 gain 만 쓴다면 무언가를 [얻다]라는 뜻이지만 전치사 on 과 함께 쓰면 쫓는 중인 대상에게 [가까워지다]라는 의미를 가집니다.

 

 

예문

We might be able to gain on them if we hurry up.
서두르면 걔들을 따라잡을 수 있을지도 몰라.

Quick! They're gaining on us.
빨리 가! 저들이 우리에게 가까워지고 있어.
