1)  upon +  사람

거의 목전에 닥친

 

The holiday season is upon us.

명절 시즌이 거의 다 됐잖아.

전치사 upon 은 on 이랑 비슷하게 쓰이지만 그 본연의 뜻인 '위에' 라는 뜻 자체로 쓰이는 경우는 거의 없는 것 같아요. 보통 숙어에서 on 대신에 upon 을 쓸 수 있는 경우가 많은데요.

on/upon ~ing = ~하자마자
based on/upon = ~에 근거하여
depend on/upon = ~에 의존하다

영상에서처럼 [upon + 사람]으로 쓰면 마치 그 사람 바로 위에 무언가가 닥치듯, 발생하기 직전을 의미합니다.

 

 

예문

Now that Christmas is upon us, the mall was so crowded with people doing their last minute shopping.

이제 크리스마스가 다가왔으니, 쇼핑몰은 막판 쇼핑을 하는 사람들로 너무 붐볐다.

 

The season's upon us, it's that time of year.

시즌이 다가왔어. 매년 그 때가 되잖아.

 

2)  already

벌써, 빨리, 이제

빨리 줘. 디저트 먹고도 남았겠다!

 

already 가 원래는 [이미]라는 뜻으로 가장 많이 쓰이죠. 그리고 사전을 찾아봐도 영상에서처럼의 쓰임은 잘 나오지 않지만, 실생활에서 꽤나 자주 쓰입니다.

누군가를 재촉하는 뉘앙스로 말을 할 때 강조의 역할을 하며 말하는 이의 짜증 섞인 태도 또한 볼 수 있는 말로, 영상에서처럼 '이미 ~하고도 남았겠다' 의 뉘앙스로 쓰이며, 때에 따라 '빨리 ~ 해. 벌써 ~했겠다' 등의 의미로 쓰여요.

 

 

예문

Let's go already. Come on!
빨리 가자. 어서!

Enough already!
이제 그만 좀 해!

Guys, be quite already.
얘들아, 진짜 조용히 좀 해.

 

3)  You're going to have to V

~해 주셔야겠습니다.

Joey, you're gonna have to stop rushing me.

조이, 자꾸 재촉하지 마.

 

 

1) 직역하면 '~을 해야 할 것입니다' 정도의 의미를 갖는데요. You have to V라고 말하면 '넌 ~을 해야 해.'라고 강하게 들리는 반면, be going to를 중간에 넣어주면 '~해야 할 거야.'로 해석이 되면서 조금 부드러운 어조를 가지게 됩니다. 정중하지만 나름 강하게 무언가를 요청할 때 쓸 수 있는 표현이에요.

2) 주어가 I 나 We 로 쓰이게 되면 내가 원해서 하는 것이 아니라 '해야 하는 것' 이기에 [~해야 할 것 같다] 정도로 해석이 되고요.

3) 영상에서는 서로가 친구라 사실 You have to stop rushing me라고 말할 수도 있지만, 레이첼이 나름 좋게좋게 얘기한다고 쓴 표현이라고 볼 수 있습니다.

 

You (are) gonna have to = a future obligation/necessity (필요성)

• Tonight you are gonna have to make a speech. (This is a future obligation.) 
• 오늘 밤 연설할 것이야
• I know I’m gonna have to apologize. ( This is a future obligation.)
• 나도 내가 사과해야 한다는 거 알아
• Sorry you missed your train. You are gonna have to wait for the next one. (This is a future necessity.)
• 기차를 놓쳐서 미안해. 다음 걸 기다려야 할 거야

You have to = present obligation/ obligations that never change (의무감)

• You have to pay taxes whether you like it or not. (This obligation never changes.)
• 좋든 싫든 세금을 내야 해. 
• You have to rest. You’re working too much. (This is a present obligation.)
• 너 쉬어야 해. 일 너무 많이 했어.
• You have to call Jim back. (This is an obligation.)
• 너 Jim한테 돌아오라고 전화해야 해.

 

 

예문

Sir. You're going to have to leave the store. Otherwise, we will have to call the police.
손님. 가게에서 나가 주셔야겠습니다. 그렇지 않으면 경찰을 부를 수밖에 없어요.

I'm gonna have to work out. Look at my belly.
운동을 해야 할 것 같아. 배 좀 봐.

4)  take/have a bite

한 입 베어 물다

bite 가 동사로 쓰였을 때도 사실 [베어 물다]라는 뜻을 가지지만, take/have a bite 도 굉장히 많이 쓰인답니다. 비슷하게 '보다'라는 뜻의 look 도 take/have a look으로 많이 쓰기도 하죠. 간단하게 먹다는 grab a bite 라고도 합니다.

 

 

예문

Honey. Your sandwich looks so yummy. Can I have a bite?
기야. 샌드위치 너무 맛있어 보인다. 한 입 먹어도 돼?

You can have a big bite.
크게 한 입 먹어도 좋아.
