1)  mug

강도 짓을 하다, 돈을 뜯다. 

Monica : Well, Ross was mugged as akid.

어릴 적에 삥 뜯긴 적 있거든.

 

mugging is a type of robbery.

robbery is taking somethig using fear and force.

mugging is a robbery taking place outside - on the street, parkings and so on.

 

1) 같은 뜻으로 rob라는 단어가 조금 더 익숙하게 다가올 수도 있으실 텐데요. (robbery = 강도). rob 은 실제로 무언가를 빼앗는 걸 의미하는데, mug는 rob 을 좀 더 쉽게 하기 위한 공격, 또는 위협적인 행동을 하는 걸 의미합니다. 넓게 봤을 땐 강도 짓의 일환이기에 [강도 짓을 하다, 속된 말로 삥 뜯기다]로 해석이 되고요.

2) 그렇기에 rob의 대상은 사람뿐만이 아니라 장소도 될 수가 있지만 mug는 사람에게만 해당하고요. 또한 공개적인 장소에서의 강도 짓을 의미합니다.

 

 

예문

It could've looked like we were mugging the old lady, but we were just asking for direction to a subway station.
우리가 그 여성 노인분께 강도 짓 하는 것처럼 보였을 수도 있지만 우린 그냥 지하철역으로 가는 길을 묻는 중이었어.

2)  rather

다소, 꽤

Well, um, there was actually a rather lively discussion about the Pleistocene-

실은 플라이스토세 지층에 관한 다소 활발한 논의가 있었어-

 

rather 의 쓰임은 여러 가지가 있지만 가장 흔하게 쓰이는 2가지 정도는 정확히 알아두시는 것이 좋아요.
1) 부사 rather = 다소, 꽤

 

예문
The test was rather difficult, but I tried my best.
시험은 다소 어려웠지만 최선을 다했어.

Jane looked rather nervous but to everyone's surprise, she nailed it.
제인은 다소 긴장되어 보였지만, 모두가 놀랍게도 끝내주게 잘했어.

 

2) 조동사 would rather = 오히려, 차라리 ~ 하겠다.

예문
I'd rather not go out tonight.
오늘은 차라리 집에 머무는 것이 낫겠다.

I'd rather skip the meal than eat this.
이걸 먹느니 차라리 굶겠어.

1. RATHER : 꽤, 다소

'Rather' is an adverb of degree like ‘fairly’, ‘quite’, etc. that can be used with nouns, adverbs, adjectives and superlatives.

• That’s rather a nuisance! 그거 꽤 짜증나겠다, 성가시겠다.
• He cooks rather well. 그는 꽤 요리를 해.
• She’s got a rather nice voice. 그녀는 꽤 괜찮은 목소리를 가졌어.
• That’s rather more than I expected to pay. 그거 내가 생각한 액수보다 다소 많은 갓 깉아. 

 

2. OR RATHER : 아니, 오히려(정정할 때 쓰이는 표현)

When we want to correct what we have just said, or make it more precise, we often use the expression ‘or rather’.

• His son is a doctor, or rather, a surgeon.

그의 아들은 의사, 아니 오히려 외과의사다.

3. RATHER THAN : ~ 보다는 오히려 

 

• It would be better to go in September rather than in August.

8월에 가는 것보다 9월에 가는 게 낫겠다. 
• I prefer to leave now rather than wait for all the speeches.

이 연설 다 듣느니 지금 나갈래.
• He decided to write rather than telephone.

그는 전화로 하는 것보다 직접 글을 쓰기로 했다. 

 

4. WOULD RATHER : 오히려, 차라리 ~ 하겠다.

The expression ‘would rather’ is followed by the bare infinitive(동사원형) (the infinitive without ‘to’).

• Would you rather live here or go back to London? I’d rather live here.
(= I would prefer to live here.)

너는 여기서 살래, 아님 런던으로 돌아갈래? 난 차라리 여기서 살겠어.  
• I don't want to go to the swimming pool. I’d rather go to the beach.
(= I would prefer to go to the beach.)

나 수영장 안 가고 싶어. 차라리 해변을 갈래. 

 

3)  have a confession to make

고백할 게 있다. 

 

Phoebe : I have a- I have a confession to make.

고백할 게 있어.

 

동사 confess 가 [고백하다, 자백하다]라는 뜻이 있는데요. 명사인 confession 을 쓸 때는 make a confession 을 써서 [고백하다]를 의미합니다. 영상에서처럼 [나 고백/자백할 게 있어] 라고 말할 땐 I have a confession to make 라는 패턴이 거의 딱 정해져있는 것처럼 쓰이기에 표현 전체를 숙지해 두시는 것이 좋습니다.

 

 

예문

I have a confession to make.. I ate your chocolate, not Charlie.
고백할 게 있어.. 찰리가 아니라 내가 너의 초콜릿을 먹었어.

Does anyone have a confession to make?
뭐 고백할 거 있는 사람?

 

4)  crap

형편 없는 것, 쓰레기 같은 것

Ross : Oh my god, crap from the street!

어머, 길거리 시절 쓰레기라니!

 

crap = 형편없는 것, 쓰레기 같은 것

trash 나 garbage 보다 강한 뉘앙스의 단어입니다.

무언가가 정말 형편없을 때 쓰는 속어로 '헛소리' 를 의미하기도 합니다.

쓰레기 동의어 : rubbish, crap, dirt, scraps, muck, mullock

 

예문

The movie was a total piece of crap.
그 영화는 완전 쓰레기였어.

Where and how did you get this crap?
어디서 어떻게 이런 쓰레기를 가져온 거야?

<조동사 + have pp >

 

1. would have pp : ~했을 텐데(실제로 안 함)

 

would는 will 보다 가능성이 낮은 느낌의 '~일텐데, 일것이다' 로 해석됩니다.

would have pp = ~했을 거야(다) / ~했을텐데 (실제로 하지 않음)

 

예시)

 

Why didn't you call me. I would have helped you.

왜 내게 전화 안 했어? 내가 도왔을텐데 (물론 전화도 안 했고 돕지도 않았다)

 

If I had seen you at the party, I would've said 'hi'.

내가 파티에서 널 봤다면, 와서 인사했을거야. (실제로 보지도 못했고 인사도 못했음)

 

If I had studied harder, I would've passed this exam.

내가 공부를 더 열심히 했다면, 이 시험 패스했을텐데.

 

I would've gone to the wedding but I couldn't skip work.

결혼식장에 갔을 거야 일만 아니었다면 (근데 일을 빼먹을 수가 없어서, 쨀 수가 없어서 )

 

If she'd asked me in a nicer way, I would've said 'yes'.

그녀가 좀 더 친절하게 물어봤다면 좋다고(괜찮다고) 말했을 거야.

 

2. could have pp : ~할 수 있었을 텐데

 

could have pp = ~할 수도 있었어(다), / ~할 수 있었을 텐데

즉, ~를 할 수도 있었지만(기회나 능력이 있었지만) 결국 하지 못하거나 안한 일에 대해 표현!

 

반면에 couldn't have done 은 할 수 없을 것을 했다는 표현을 할 때 쓴다.

I couldn't have done it without you. 너 없이는 못 했을 꺼야 (해냈다.)

 

예시)

 

We could have tried other options.

다른 옵션을 택 했을 수도 있었는데

 

I could have eaten more if I had had more time.

시간만 더 있었다면 더 먹을 수도 있었어.

 

I could have gone there, but I chose not to.

난 거기 갈 수도 있었지만 안가기로 결정했어.

 

I could've got into any university, if I had applied.

내가 지원만 했다면 어느 대학도 들어갈 수 있었어.

 

You totally could have asked her number! Why did you let her go?!

너 완전 그 여자애 번호 물어볼 수 있었는데! 왜 그냥 가게 냅뒀어?!

 

You could've done it better if you had paid more attention (to it).

너가 더 집중했었다면 더 잘 할 수도 있었어.

 

3. should have pp : (후회를 나타내는 표현) ~할 걸 그랬어

 

should have pp = ~했어야 했다, ~할 걸 그랬어

즉, 했어야 했는데 하지 못한 일에 대한 후회, 아쉬움을 표현합니다.

 

예시)

 

I shouldn't have gone to the party. 난 파티에 가지 말았어야 했는데 (그런데 갔다)

= I was supposed to study 

= I was not supposed to go to the party.

 

You should've said that earlier. 너 그걸 더 일찍 말했어야지.

 

We should have left earlier to get tickets.

우린 티켓을 사기 위해 좀 더 일찍 출발 했어야 했다. 

 

You should've told the truth. 넌 진실을 말했어야 했다.

 

We shouldn't have drunk so much. 우리 술을 너무 마시면 안됐어.

 

It's freezing cold here in Canada, I should've brought more winter clothes.

여기 캐나다 엄청 추워, 나 겨울 옷 좀 더 가져올 걸 그랬어.

 

I shouldn't have bought these shoes, they are a lot cheaper online.

나 이 신발 사지 말았어야 했어. 온라인에서 훨씬 싸.

 

 

4. might have pp : (추측) ~ 이었을지도 모른다.

 

might = ~일지도 모른다 (약한 추측, 자신 없는 추측)

might have pp = ~이었을지도 모른다 , ~했을지도 모른다, 아마 ~ 했나봐

 

예시)

 

There might have been some hesitation. 망설임이 있었던 것 같다

 

He might have forgotten my name cuz he never calls me by name.

그는 내 이름을 까먹었는지도 몰라 왜냐면 내 이름을 전혀 안 불러.

 

If you had been there on time, you might have seen her.

네가 만약 제 시간에 거기 왔다면, 그녀를 볼 수 있었을지도 몰라.

 

It that hadn't happened, this might've happened instead.

만약 그게 일어나지 않았었다면, 대신 이 일이 일어났을지도 몰라.

 

You're so lucky. If you had stayed longer someone might have killed you.

너 운 엄청 좋은거야. 더 오래 거기 있었다면 누군가가 널 죽였을지도 몰라.

 

5. must have pp : (강한 추측) 분명 ~ 했었을 거야

 

must have pp = 틀림없이 ~이었을거야 / 분명 ~ 했나봐 / ~했던 모양이야

 

예시)

 

It must have rained here. 여기 비가 왔음에 틀립없다.

 

You must have been busy because you never miss that meeting.

너 바빴었나봐? 그 모임 빠지는 일 없잖아.

 

You really ate this all? You must've been hungry.

너 진짜 이거 다 먹었어?? 완전 배고팠었구나. (배고팠던 모양이구나)

 

He must have taken the wrong exit. 걔 분명 다른 길로 빠졌을거야.

 

Her car is gone, so she must've left already.

그녀의 자동차가 없는걸 보니 이미 떠난게 분명하네.(이미 떠난 모양이네)

 

비교 ★

 

I could've eaten more if I had had more time.

시간이 더 있었다면 더 먹을 수도 있었어. (하지만 먹지 못 함, 그럴 기회, 능력 있었음)

 

I would've eaten more if I had known I wasn't paying this.

만약 내가 사는 게 아니라는 걸 알았었다면 더 먹었을 거야. (과거에 will 일것이다, 했을거야)

 

You can't even walk? You must've eaten a lot.

걷지도 못하겠어? 엄청 먹은 모양이네.(엄청 많이 먹었나보군, 강한 추측)

 

A: Who ate my food? / 누가 내 음식 먹었어?

B: He might have eaten that because he seems nervous.

쟤가 먹었을지도 몰라 왜냐면 뭔가 초조해 보여. (약한 추측)

 

I should have eaten more because I'm already hungry.
